Called to testify in an FTC court case against Microsoft over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the company’s CEO Satya Nadella said he’d like to ditch console exclusives entirely, but that’s not something he can decide on his own.
From his position as head of Microsoft, that’s his point of view, he really could have made the decision to drop Xbox exclusives, but Nadella said he couldn’t do it unilaterally, given the position of Microsoft’s gaming division, because the market leader, Sony, still will continue to use this strategy.
“I would like to be able to completely eliminate console exclusives, but that is not for me to determine,” Nadella said during the trial. “Especially from the perspective of a competitor that is in the minority.”
Actually the problem is that “a dominant competitor has defined market competition with exclusivesNadella explained, referring to Sony. “I don’t like this world” he repeated, confirming his lack of enthusiasm for the idea of exclusives.
