Microsoft buys Activision Blizzard for more than $60 million

The world of video games is expanding without precedent and the main technology companies continue to bet on this industry. On this occasion, Microsoft has announced the purchase of Activision Blizzard, taking over massive franchises like World of Warcraft, Call of Duty and Overwatch.

The purchase of Activision Blizzard will make Microsoft the third largest video game company in the world

This 2022 is full of great surprises, and the Windows giant has been in charge of giving one of the biggest announcements for the video game industry. In this sense, Microsoft celebrates the purchase of Activision Blizzard for a total of 68,700 million dollars. Thus, the North American company seeks to accelerate its growth in the game market for consoles, computers and mobiles.

Similarly, This acquisition is also intended to lay the foundation for the metaverse., a common goal with Qualcomm’s recent partnership with Microsoft to create AR glasses. The company led by Satya Nadella expects that upon completion of the transaction it will become “the third largest video game company in the world by revenue”, closely following Tencent and Sony.

On the other hand, Activision franchises are expected to fuel and take the Redmond giant’s Game Pass to a new level. In this sense, Call of Duty, Overwatch, Diablo, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone and Candy Crush would pass into the hands of Microsoft, along with all the experience of one of the largest external video game publishers. However, it is not clear if the upcoming titles will remain exclusive to Xbox.

For now, Activision Blizzard CEO Booby Kotick will remain at the helm until the Microsoft purchase is finalized. Likewise, the relevant closing reviews and the certification of the shareholders’ meeting are still necessary. In this sense, the transaction is expected to close in mid-2023.
