The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has blamed Microsoft for the Xbox leak, which has resulted in a long series of behind-the-scenes details about the company’s life and plans appearing on the Internet.
The leak stemmed from attachments of a single court document uploaded to a website hosted by the US District Court for the Northern District of California, where the FTC is suing Microsoft over its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
At first glance, a PDF document looks just like any other heavily edited document. However, when opening the PDF file using Adobe Reader, you will find a number of attachments detailing Xbox’s plans, as well as confidential correspondence between company executives.
This is a huge leak, and everyone is trying to figure out who is to blame for the mistake that led to the discovery of this information that Microsoft clearly did not want to make public.
In a tweet, Douglas Farrar, the FTC’s director of public affairs, reiterated that the FTC is not to blame, and in a statement to NBCNews, he accused Microsoft of creating its own problems, saying:
Microsoft is responsible for any error in uploading these documents to the court.
However, Microsoft has not yet commented on this issue. The documents have apparently been deleted, but the information from them is now online.
