It seems that the day when “Step Recording Tool” will be removed from Windows is approaching.
In November 2023, Microsoft designated Step Recorder as a deprecated Windows feature and announced that it would be removed in the future.
The Step Recorder (psr.exe) is no longer updated and will be removed in a future release of Windows. We recommend using Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar, Microsoft Clipchamp, etc. to record your screen.
At the time, there was no mention of when it would be removed, but Microsoft has now announced a newRetirement of step recording tool” (Steps Recorder deprecation), where they explain as follows:
In the Windows 11 update in early 2024, a banner will be implemented in the “Step Recording Tool” stating the deprecation. This banner increases awareness of the deprecation and encourages migration to similar features available in Windows.
Please note that you can continue to use the Step Recording Tool on Windows versions prior to the Windows 11 update scheduled for early 2024.
― Microsoft
According to Microsoft, a discontinuation notification banner will be displayed in the “Step Recorder” in early 2024. This banner has already been implemented in the Windows 11 Insider Preview Canary channel.

“This tool is being phased out” now appears
Eventually, the above banner will be displayed on the regular version of Windows, and it seems that the “Step Recording Tool” will be removed from Windows in the not too distant future.
