In this sense, he said that the company was not “immune” to a global economy weaker, by justifying the decision to do without such a number of employees, who represent 5 percent of the total that the company has.

“We live in times of significant changesand when I meet with customers and partners, some things are clear,” Nadella wrote, in a memo sent to employees.

“First, how we saw customers accelerate their digital spend during the pandemic, we now see them optimize their digital spend to do more with less,” Nadella explained, adding that “these decisions They are difficult, but necessary”.

Microsoft employs 221,000 people worldwide, including 122,000 in the United States.

In any case, the executive clarified that the reductions will be completed by the end of the third quarter fiscal year this year, which ends next March.

Many tech companies did big cuts in their workforce in recent months, while Amazon announced plans to lay off 18,000 people and Salesforce said it will cut 10 percent of its staff. Facebook parent Meta also plans to cut 11,000 jobs.
