Starting next year, Microsoft will offer European businesses and governments the option to store their data only on servers in Europe, the company announced on Thursday. Now this often happens in other places, like in the US.
More and more people are using the cloud. Much data is no longer located on the computers themselves, but is stored on the servers of technology companies. These are often found outside of Europe, for example in the USA.
There is no general legislation for personal data protection in that country. This is the case of the European Union. All member states must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Microsoft says it will adjust its policy because it is often unclear to European businesses and governments where their data is stored. Furthermore, it is often not clear whether this is done in accordance with European law.
Microsoft will update the policy on January 1. For now, it only applies to Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Azure services.
