Microsoft Agrees to Pay $20 Million Fine for Violating Children’s Online Privacy Act – US Federal Trade Commission

US authorities announced yesterday that Microsoft has agreed to pay a $ 20 million fine to settle accusations that it collected personal information about children without their parents’ consent.

The US Federal Trade Commission accused Microsoft of collecting personal information from children who use the Xbox computer games without informing their parents or obtaining their consent, while keeping this information illegally.

The agency said Microsoft’s actions violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

In addition to the fine, Microsoft will be committed to strengthening measures to protect the privacy of young users of the Xbox gaming device. The FTC said it would extend protections under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act to other game developers that share children’s data with Microsoft.

“Our proposed order makes it easier for parents to protect the privacy of their children on Xbox, and limits the amount of information Microsoft can collect and retain about children,” said Samuel Levine, director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Office of Consumer Protection.

The agreement between Microsoft and the Authority needs to be ratified by a federal court in order to enter into force.
