Microsoft adds support for multiple archive formats on Windows 11

Microsoft held its annual Microsoft Build 2023 developer conference on Tuesday (5/23). Microsoft has previously integrated support for the ZIP archive format in Windows, but to handle other formats, users must install additional third-party programs,This time Microsoft plans to integrate the libarchive open source projectso that Windows can directly support various archive formats.

libarchive is a multi-format archiving and compression library that can be used to read and write different formats, covering the above-mentioned Tar, 7-ZIP, RAR and GZ, as well as Pax, Cpio, ISO9660, Mtree, Ar and WARC, etc.

Microsoft revealed to The VergeWindows 11 support for the new format will appear in a new version released this week.
