Microsoft Acquires Game Developer Activision Blizzard, Sony Says

Sony wants Activision games to remain multiplatform.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Last week, Microsoft announced it would buy game developer Activision Blizzard. The acquisition is worth about 68.7 billion US dollars or around Rp. 1000 trillion. After the transaction is closed will make Microsoft a company game third largest in the world.

Microsoft will pay $95 per share of Activision Blizzard purchased. This acquisition will accelerate the growth of Microsoft’s gaming business across mobile, PC, console and cloud.

Sony responds to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in a statement to Wall Street Journal. Sony said it hoped Microsoft would ensure Activision games are multiplatform.

Meanwhile, Activision said it would honor existing commitments once the acquisition closes in 2023 and would not remove anything from platform already available like Minecraft.

Since Microsoft bought Minecraft in 2014 for US$2.5 billion, Microsoft has maintained a version for platform PlayStation, Nintendo, and Apple have been released. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has also said that the company does not intend to attract the community from platform Sony.

Reported Techspot, Friday (21/1), the future of Activision and Blizzard games is likely to be similar to Bethesda games. After Microsoft bought Zenimax, it maintained its time exclusivity for Deahtloop dan Ghostwire: Tokyo.

As planned last year, Quake remastered launched on PlayStation and Bethesda is still supporting the PlayStation version of Elder Scrolls Online with new content and DLC. However, future games like Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI will be exclusive to Xbox and Windows.

Activision Blizzard’s current projects for the PlayStation include this year’s and next year’s Call of Duty games, namely Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV. Those games will probably still launch with the PlayStation version.
