A microchip under the skin that once inserted is able to reveal if the patient will develop the symptoms of Covid-19. The invention, devised by Pentagon scientists, was unveiled Sunday evening at ’60 Minutes’ on CBS. Retired Colonel Matt Hepburn, a former military infectious disease physician who led the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency’s (DARPA) response to the pandemic, demonstrated the technology over the course of the program.
“It’s a sensor that goes under the skin and tells us what chemical reactions are going on. It works like a warning light on an engine and that signal means you will have symptoms tomorrow, ”Hepburn explained.
Microchip under the skin “to block the spread of coronavirus”
The inspiration for the microchip under the skin comes from the fight to stop the spread of the coronavirus aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, where 1,271 crew members tested positive. “If the sailors had known of their positivity they would have undergone tests on the spot with a blood sample”, he underlined, explaining that with this technology “we can have information on the positivity in 3-5 minutes, stopping the infection in the bud” .
But there is more. In addition to the coronavirus-detecting microchip, Hepburn said his team also experimented with a filter that, when placed on a dialysis machine, is able to remove the virus from the blood.
“It passes the blood through the filter and it eliminates the virus,” he explained. The filter was used to treat the wife of a Covid positive military person, hospitalized in intensive care with organ failure and septic shock. After a few days the woman recovered completely. For this the treatment has now been approved by the FDA for emergency use and has been used to treat nearly 300 patients. adnkronos
