MORELIA, Mich., December 31, 2023.- With its permanent vaccination campaign, the Ministry of Health of Michoacán (SSM) immunized 391,257 dogs and cats against rabies during this year, in order to protect the population of the entity against this deadly viral disease, which has not recorded cases in humans since 1996.
Through a press release it was reported that according to the head of the Vectors and Zoonoses department of the SSM, Juan Alejandro Rodríguez Hernández, from January to December, workshops were held in health centers, public squares and house-to-house brigades. house in vulnerable localities of the 113 municipalities of the entity.
The health jurisdictions with the highest vaccination coverage were Uruapan with 55,903 doses applied, followed by Zitácuaro with 45,037, Morelia with 42,446, and Apatzingán with 41,583.
The anti-rabies regimen consists of one dose each year, but pets under one year of age must receive a vaccine during the first month of life, a booster after three months, and then the annual administration.
In addition to immunizing dogs and cats, the Ministry of Health carried out 15,730 sterilizations to contribute to the control of animal reproduction. Both services are free and available in more than 50 medical units of the entity, located in municipalities such as Morelia, Uruapan, Pátzcuaro, Zamora, La Piedad, Lázaro Cárdenas, Apatzingán and Zitácuaro.
