The hypothesis seems highly unlikely, given both the limited time frame and Biden’s desire to run at any cost
Has former first lady Michelle Obama secretly started her campaign to replace Joe Biden? That’s the question the conservative New York Post asked in an article signed by gossip expert Cindy Adams, according to which former President Barack Obama’s wife is already working to enter the field for the presidential election in November.
Adams, a 90-year-old correspondent known in upper Manhattan circles, predicted that Biden would announce his withdrawal in May to make way for the former first lady, who would then become the official candidate for the August 19-22 convention in Chicago, the Illinois city where she and her husband were born.
“But for now,” Adams wrote, “Biden would behave like the real candidate.”
The hypothesis seems highly unlikely, given both the limited time frame and Biden’s desire to run at any cost. But it’s a rumor that’s been floating around for months, in part propagated by conservative circles themselves.
Former candidate Vivek Ramaswamy mentioned it in one of the recent televised debates.
Obama himself had tried in the past to convince Biden to take a step back. Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s historical adviser, Roger Stone, raised this hypothesis several times.
“I,” he said recently, “continue to predict that Michelle Obama will be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024.”
The assumption has also been circulating in the US media for months. Each statement of the former first lady is perceived as a subliminal message in preparation for the big announcement. Like when, in early January, Michelle said she lived in “terror” about what “could happen if Trump wins the election in November.”
“The thing that keeps me up at night,” she answered a question from a podcast host, “has more to do with the world we live in than personal issues.”
“There are things,” she added, “that keep you awake because you can’t control them and you wonder what you can do.” I am terrified of what could happen” in November. We can’t take democracy for granted – she warned – that’s what worries me the most.”
The answer, according to conservatives, could be only one: the charismatic 60-year-old woman has been put on the battlefield to face the 81-year-old Biden and the 77-year-old Trump.
Certainly, the former first lady will not suffer from a shortage of donations, given her power over the audience: for a one-hour public speech, she earns 750 thousand dollars.
