Michelle Obama: “Four years ago, defeat was much more narrow and also very painful, but we went for a smooth and respectful transfer of power” | US presidential election

Michelle Obama, who remained in the background during the presidential campaign, is now clear about Donald Trump’s refusal to admit his loss and to push for a mature transfer of power. On Instagram, she recalls how difficult it was for her to receive Melania Trump in the White House four years ago. “Our democracy is so much bigger than anyone’s ego,” writes the former first lady.

“Hillary Clinton had to endure a much more narrow and painful defeat than we see now,” Michelle Obama dives back in time on Instagram four years. “I was hurt and disappointed, but the votes were counted and Donald Trump was the winner.” The presidential couple instructed the staff to do what George and Laura Bush had done for the Obamas in 2008: “go for a respectful and smooth transfer of power.” They invited the team of then-president-elect Donald Trump to office, briefed them extensively and shared their experience of the past eight years with them.

“I have to be honest and say none of this was easy for me,” said Michelle Obama. Donald Trump had spread racist lies about my husband, putting my family at risk. I would never forgive him for that. But I knew that in the interest of our country, I needed to find the strength and maturity to put my anger aside. I welcomed Melania Trump to the White House and talked to her about my experience and answered all her questions. ”

“This is not a game,” she addresses Trump supporters and Republicans who refuse to recognize Joe Biden as the winner of the election. “I therefore call on all Americans, especially the leaders, to respect the electoral process, regardless of the parties, and to work towards a smooth transfer of power, as incumbent presidents have always done throughout our history.”
