Michele Renzo, the prosecutor in the ‘Monster of Foligno’ case, has died

(ANSA) – PERUGIA, AUGUST 16 – Michele Renzo, a magistrate who had been retired for a year and who died suddenly of illness in Perugia where he lived with his family after being born in Alife, in the province of Caserta, on August 28, 1953, was known for his preparation and acumen at work but also for his irony, so much so that he was respectfully called “Dr. Sottile” by journalists. As a deputy prosecutor in the Umbrian capital, he had, among other things, dealt with the investigations, together with Fausto Cardella, into Luigi Chiatti, the surveyor who murdered two children and was called “the monster of Foligno”. Renzo ended his career in August 2023 as chief prosecutor in L’Aquila, a position to which he had been appointed by the Superior Council of the Judiciary in 2016. Previously, he had held the same role in Ascoli Piceno, coordinating, among other things, the investigations, in 2014, into the collision of two Tornado planes causing the death of four young pilots and the murder of Melania Rea which had led to the arrest of Salvatore Parolisi. After about ten years as deputy prosecutor in Perugia, Renzo left the Office in September 1998 to be assigned to the Ministry of Justice as an inspector. With colleagues Fausto Cardella, Alessandro Cannevale and Silvia Della Monica, he had been part of the pool that had dealt with the most delicate investigations into corruption involving colleagues serving in Rome. The investigations into the “dirty robes” that had involved, among others, Pierfrancesco Pacini Battaglia and Lorenzo Necci. Renzo was considered a true scholar of law. A Napoli fan, he was passionate about arthouse films. (ANSA).
