MarketingMichel Sardou sells “Don’t touch Connemara” t-shirts
The singer’s farewell tour has just started and, in the merchandising, we find a little nod to the controversy with Juliette Armanet.
Michel Sardou began his “I remember a farewell” tour on October 2 in Rouen (F). According to several media present in the room, one of the highlights was obviously the title “The Lakes of Connemara”.
On stage, the 76-year-old artist, however, made no mention of the controversy that shook the summer. As a reminder, Juliette Armanet said she did not appreciate this song at all during parties. On the other hand, at the concert store, fans could purchase a “We don’t touch Connemara” t-shirt for 25 euros. A great marketing move!
Accompanied by 22 musicians including guitarist Pierre Billon, his childhood friend, and six backing singers, Michel Sardou belted out his hits for more than an hour and a half without leaving the stage, with his voice intact, embellishing some with anecdotes, but also XXL digital animations. Recalling a memorable duet during a concert at the Parc de Sceaux, the artist, for example, paid tribute to Johnny Hallyday with “Quelque chose de Tennessee”.
In a 50-year career punctuated by 26 studio albums, 18 live albums and nearly 350 songs, Michel Sardou has produced dozens of hits anchored in collective memory, sometimes arousing controversy, as in 1976 with “Je suis pour”, perceived as a plea in favor of the death penalty, becoming the bête noire of the far left, and which he no longer sings on stage.
Two dates in Geneva
In 2017, Michel Sardou, one of the biggest record sellers of French song, announced in “Le Parisien” and on RTL his decision to stop singing, determined then to devote himself to theater. His last tour, completed in 2018, brought together more than 450,000 spectators.
This tour of more than 60 dates, “I remember a farewell”, will stretch until March 2024, including two dates at the Geneva ArenaDecember 8, 2023 as well as February 9, 2024.
