Michael Volle to Replace John Lundgren in Bayreuth Festival’s “The Flying Dutchman”

Bayreuth (dpa) – The Bayreuth Festival presents a new singer for the title role of the opera “The Flying Dutchman” about two months before the start. John Lundgren “cancelled his participation for personal reasons,” said festival spokesman Hubertus Herrmann on Tuesday. Instead, Michael Volle (63) will take over the game. Director Katharina Wagner thanks Volle “extraordinarily”. The baritone made his debut in Bayreuth in 2007, and was last seen and heard as Hans Sachs in “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” in 2021.

Lundgren had already canceled his Bayreuth appearances last year and returned his roles in “Dutch” and “Ring des Nibelungen”. The Bayreuth Festival traditionally begins on July 25th.
