Michael van Gerwen sustained a shoulder injury during the final day of play in Premier League darts on Thursday. He was therefore missing in the semifinals against Dimitri Van den Bergh.
Analyst and former Premier League contender Wayne Mardle hopes van Gerwen will be fit again for the play-offs. “It was wise not to play the semi-finals. Now it’s about next week at the O2. His health is the top priority. If he gets better within a week then that’s great, but if he’s not and that if the point is he can’t play with a minor injury next week then that can prolong the healing process and potentially jeopardize the rest of the year,” Mardle told Sky Sports.
Mardle added: “He’s a winner and will think ‘even if I’m not 100 per cent I’m good enough’ but you have to be realistic and he could do worse and be out for the next two or three months, which is a disaster would be for him.”
