Michael van Gerwen qualified for the final of the Premier League round in Berlin on Thursday. ‘Mighty Mike’ defeated Nathan Aspinall (6-4) and Michael Smith (6-5) in succession.
The 34-year-old Van Gerwen had to work hard for his victory in both matches. He was even 4-1 behind against Aspinall. The Englishman recorded an average of more than 115 per three arrows in the first four legs.
After that, Aspinall’s level dropped and Van Gerwen came back into the match. The Dutchman won five legs in a row and immediately hit his first match dart on double 12. Van Gerwen recorded an average of 100.30 per three darts. Aspinall started well, but ultimately did not get further than an average score of 93.81.
In his match against Smith, it was Van Gerwen who lost a 4-1 lead. At 5-5, an eleventh leg had to decide. Van Gerwen started with two 180s. He did not throw a nine-darter, but he did win the match. The Brabander recorded an excellent average of 107.10.
Van Gerwen will play against Luke Littler or Luke Humphries in the final. Seventeen-year-old Littler was too strong for Rob Cross with 6-5. Reigning world champion Humphries defeated Peter Wright 6-4.
