Michael Thomas’ ankle injury is more serious than initially thought. The New Orleans Saints receiver is expected to have to pause for several weeks.

Thomas initially believed he could continue playing without a break after being injured in the Saints’ season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The star receiver will try to return earlier than planned, although there is a possibility that he will still be placed on the injured reserve list, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Thomas has grown into one of the NFL’s top offensive players since joining the league in 2016. Last season he made the most catches (149) and yards (1,725) and was named Offensive Player of the Year.

The 27-year-old was barely a threat in the Saints’ 34-23 win over the Buccaneers, catching just three passes for 17 yards.

New Orleans will face the Las Vegas Raiders, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Los Angeles Chargers for the next four weeks.
