It was not an option for Michael Reiziger to include Ryan Gravenberch in the Dutch Juniors selection for this international match. The national coach does not rule out that the midfielder will be called up again in the future, despite his earlier cancellation.
“It would be strange if it were now over with him at the Dutch Juniors. He is a boy with a lot of potential and he is still young. I think that a person always deserves an extra chance. Not everyone makes the best decisions or one where you the consequences of this,” Reiziger told NU.nl on Monday.
Gravenberch thanked the Dutch Juniors last month, because he wanted to focus on his new club Liverpool. The 21-year-old midfielder exchanged Bayern Munich on Deadline Day for a contract with the English superpower. Reiziger previously said he was not happy with that.
National coach Ronald Koeman also did not appreciate Gravenberch’s action. Koeman had already left out Jeremie Frimpong – who is now part of the Dutch national team selection – for the same reason. Reiziger also ‘punished’ Gravenberch for his action.
‘Signal has been issued’
“Nigel (de Jong, director of football affairs at the KNVB, ed.) has had contact with him, but I have not. It was not an option to call him up now. The signal has now been sent to him, but you are still busy with a group. It is something you have to want to belong to.”
Reiziger could not say whether Gravenberch will be called up again during the next international match. “I don’t know if this is a one-off. But we are not going to write off young players anyway,” Reiziger said.
The Dutch Juniors will play against Georgia (away) on Thursday in the qualifying series for the European Championship in Slovakia in 2025 and against Gibraltar (away) next Tuesday. Reiziger’s team is in good shape in the qualifying series. The first two group matches have already been won.
