Michael Matthews won the third stage of the Giro d’Italia in the sprint. The Australian, in a very complicated arrival, beats the former world champion Pedersen, Groves, Albanese and Oldani. For him, without victories for 300 days, it is the third success on the roads of the Giro after those conquered in 2014 and 2015. The general classification does not change with Evenepoel who precedes Ganna by 22″ and Almeida by 29″.

The race came alive on the climb that leads to the pass of the Monticchio Lakes, when there were more than 30 km to the finish line. On that road in the woods Filippo Zana demonstrated that the words before the start (“Today with Matthews we can do well”) weren’t dictated to the wind. The Italian champion was good at taking a step that poisoned the legs of many sprinters and skimmed the group in favor of his captain in the Jayco-AlUla jersey. At the top, 3rd category gpm, however, it was the French Thibaut Pinot who passed first and collected the 9 points up for grabs. Not happy, the 32-year-old from Groupama – winner of Lombardia 2018 – repeated himself on the La Croce pass, gpm of 4a. another 3 points and place on the podium earned to receive the blue jersey of best climber.

Sepp Kuss is an experienced rider, 28 years old and 7 pro seasons on the World Tour, who is part of the battleship Jumbo-Visma. In the Monticchio descent he had a problem with the gearbox which required him to change the bike. Done though, and it’s a mistake, on the left side of the roadway.

Problems 15 km from the finish for the Portuguese Joao Almeida who slips downhill and damages his bike which needs to be changed. Moments of stress that the third in the standings would have gladly done without.
