A jersey worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan was auctioned in New York for 10.1 million dollars (about ten million euros). The shirt set a new record for an athlete’s collectibles at auction on Thursday, auction house Sotheby’s said.
Jordan wore his team’s red number 23 Chicago Bulls jersey in the first game of the 1998 NBA Finals series, where he won his sixth and final championship. Sotheby’s auctioned off a pair of Jordan basketball shoes last year for nearly $ 1.5 million.
The Jordan shirt broke the record price set by a shirt worn by Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona last year. The shirt in which Maradona scored his legendary “Hand of God” goal in 1986 was auctioned for the equivalent of $ 8.6 million.
