CELEBRITIESThe hat that the King of Pop Michael Jackson wore when he did his first moonwalk was sold on Tuesday for 77,640 euros. The sale took place in Paris, in the presence of many fans of the singer. This was announced by auction house Hôtel Drouot.
Jackson wore the hat on March 25, 1983 during a performance for the 25th anniversary of the Motown label. There he performed his famous moonwalk for the first time on television and sang his popular song ‘Billy Jean’. The hat was taken off by the American singer and ended up with a visitor. “A certain Adam Kelly, from whom we have the badge for the March 5, 1983 show, picked up the hat that day,” said Arthur Perault of the Artpèges gallery, which auctioned the fedora. “He thought the singer’s staff would come and get the hat, but that didn’t happen.”
Kelly kept the silk-lined wool hat for years. He eventually sold the item to an American collector. Not much later, the accessory appeared in a European collection. Michael Jackson’s hat was estimated at between 60,000 and 100,000 euros.
The company behind the auction, Lemon Auction, also auctions other items from music history. Shoes from Michael Jackson, a guitar from blues artist T-bone Walker and clothing from Johnny Hallyday and Depeche Mode will be auctioned this week.
