Michael J. Fox talks about his ten-year fight against Parkinson’s: “My short-term memory is destroyed” – Corriere.it

For almost thirty years Michael J. Fox fight against the Parkinson (the first diagnosis was in 1991, but was made public in 1998) and now the disease has also affected his memory skills, which are fundamental for an actor. My short-term memory shattered – revealed the 59-year-old actor to People magazine, who dedicated the cover to him -. I’ve always had a real skill at memorizing lines, but in the last two jobs I did the parts to learn were complex and I struggled with both. To improve speech and diction, Fox now practices tongue twisters, but aware that memorizing words is becoming increasingly difficult, he has channeled his undeniable writing talent: his fourth memoir – No Time Like the Future – will in fact be on sale from November 17th. I’m not good with the guitar and I don’t draw well anymore, I’ve never been inclined to dance and acting is getting more difficult – continued the “Back to the Future” star – so I started writing and, luckily, I have fun. really.

Surgery for a benign tumor

Despite the success and popularity achieved through cinema and TV (he appeared in the Spin City series from 1996 to 2001 and in The Good Wife from 2010 to 2016), it certainly cannot be said that Fox’s life was easy: in 2018 in fact, a benign spinal tumor forced him to undergo surgery to avoid being paralyzed and in the four months following the surgery he had to learn to walk again. One morning while he was alone at home in New York, he fell in the kitchen and broke his arm. That was certainly my darkest moment, in which I questioned everything – explained the actor – because I couldn’t see a positive side, only regret and pain. To help him regain his positive spirit, giving him today what he calls the optimism of a 60-year-old man, were also reruns of some television games from the 70s he saw while he was in bed in convalescence. I learned to accept what happened – admitted Fox, married to actress Tracy Pollan since 1988 and a father of four – which doesn’t mean you can’t force yourself to change it or that you have to see it as punishment or penance, but that you have to put it in its place. The last two years have been more complicated than the others, but I have been blessed with simply amazing things and, after going through dark times, now my deepest gratitude.
