In addition to Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox has taken some other physical and mental beatings in recent years. The actor does not want to say that he was depressed because of it, but he was close to it.
The 61-year-old Canadian broke his shoulder, elbow and hand, among other things, and almost lost a finger as a result of an infection. “And that sucked,” he says Variety. In addition, his mother and father-in-law died and he had to put down his dog Gus.
All those setbacks created a “emptiness” that he also experienced when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991. Fox used to try to drink his problems away, but now he’s been sober for more than thirty years.
The life of the Back to the Future-actor has not become any easier due to the aggravated disease symptoms. “I have assistants around me in case I fall. It’s hard to deal with that lack of privacy,” says Fox.
“I’ve lost family members, my dog, my freedom and my health. I’m hesitant to use the term depression because I’m not certified to diagnose myself, but all the signs were there. But my family pulled me out.”
