Michael Chapman was born in New York in 1935. He gained experience, among other things, as an assistant cameraman for the film The Godfather, gradually developed into a chief cameraman and also tried directing in the film The Right Game in 1983.

Chapman received two Oscar nominations for the camera in the legendary films The Refugee with Harrison Ford and Furious Bull with Robert DeNir. In 2004, he received a special Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers.
