Super bad fame led Michael Cera to a crisis
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Michael Cera expressed feelings of being overwhelmed by fame that led to discomfort in his own skin and paranoia.
Cera opened up about his experience after receiving a lot of fame and attention for playing his character Evan on Superbad. “I didn’t know how to handle walking down the street. Fame makes you feel very uncomfortable in your own skin and makes you paranoid and weird.”
He explained that with fame he was able to meet many types of people both good and bad. Particularly the “bad energies” gave him a difficult time. Drunks would be a classic example,” she says. “You know, if people are drunk and they recognize you and they’re very excited, but it can also be a bit toxic. When you are a child, people also feel that they can grab you, they are not so respectful of you or your physical space.
The Canadian actor felt that accepting bigger roles brought more unwanted attention that didn’t suit him. That implied taking a step back in commercial projects. “There was a point where I wanted to stop taking jobs that would make me more famous.” During that time he turned down a hosting role on Saturday Night Live. “I was having a bit of a meltdown…I wasn’t really enjoying the level of heat.” That stress he was dealing with got to such a point that he even considered giving up his acting career. “I really didn’t know if he was going to continue being an actor.”
Michael Cera in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie
Michael Cera appears in the new Barbie movie, making it one of the biggest commercial movies he’s been in since Superbad. He will play the Allan doll, which was created in 1964 as Ken’s best friend but discontinued the following year. The character is “something of an outcast figure” and, as Cera put it, he felt “desperate to be a part of it.”
Barbie will be released in theaters on July 21.
