Englishman Michael Carrick will leave the interim technical command of Manchester United, considering it to be the right time to do so, having guided the team in the last three games.
“My time at this great club will always be remembered as the best years of my career. When I first signed 15 years ago, never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined winning so many trophies. Certainly, I will never forget the fantastic memories both as a player and a member of the technical team,” noted Carrick, after leading United to victory over Arsenal (3-2), with a Cristiano Ronaldo ‘bis’ and a Bruno Fernandes goal.
The 40-year-old former midfielder then revealed that “after a lot of thinking, he has decided that the time is right to leave the club”.
Carrick, English international on 33 occasions, represented the ‘red devils’ between 2006 and 2018, playing a total of 462 matches, before joining the technical team of Portuguese José Mourinho, later performing the same assistant duties alongside the Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, fired on 21 November.
After the departure of Solskjaer, who in three years had not won any title for the club, Carrick temporarily assumed the helm of the team, until the arrival of a new coach: in the Champions League, the former assistant of the Norwegian managed a 2-win victory. 0 at home to Villarreal and in the league imposed a 1-1 draw against leaders Chelsea.
On Monday, German Ralf Rangnick, 63, was hired to take over as coach until the end of the season, and will spend another two years as adviser to the club, in which Diogo Dalot also lines up.
The former Leipzig coach will start his role in the “red devils” on Thursday and will make his debut on Sunday, against Crystal Palace.
