Magda Linette defeated the Russian tennis player Evgenia Rodina 6:3, 6:4 and advanced to the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament on hard courts in Miami (prize pool of USD 8.8 million). The next rival of the Polish woman will be the winner of the duel of Italian Camila Giorgi with Belarusian Wiktoria Azarenka.
Linette posted a career high of 19th in the world rankings on Monday, but after a life-long success in the Australian Open semi-final, she slowed down and was knocked out in the first round in her last two events.
Now, at the beginning, she had the so-called free draw, and in the second round she broke the bad streak and for the first time since 2016 will play for the 1/8 finals of the Miami Open.
The meeting with the 34-year-old Rodina, who recently resumed her career after a long break and is ranked 369th in the world, began according to the idea of the Poznań woman. She quickly took a 4-0 lead and won the set 6-3 after 41 minutes of play.
The second set was more even, and the well-serving Polish woman had to “chase” the score from 1: 3, but she came out on 5: 3 and used another opportunity with her own serve to end the meeting after 86 minutes of competition.
The Poznań player scored 10 service aces, two double faults and four breaks out of eight. Rodina had no aces, made two double faults and converted two of her five break points.
It was the third duel and the third victory of the 31-year-old Linette over a rival three years older. In 2018, she defeated her in WTA events in Bogota and Tianjin.
On Wednesday, Iga Świątek, the best in the tournament a year ago, withdrew from the tournament due to health problems.
