After failing twice on the bottom step in four years, the Miami Heat will be one of the most intriguing teams to watch next offseason.
Will they bet on continuity, counting on the workforce that shone in the playoffs and not forgetting that they can add Tyler Herro whose extension to 120 million over 4 years begins next year? Or will they choose to go into the market “star hunting”?
Erik Spoelstra, Jimmy Butler and the Heat: the embodiment of class
In The Hoop Collective PodcastBrian Windhorst ensures that the Miami Heat intends to explore this second option:
« They have draft picks available to them, and they potentially have contracts to trade, and I think they’re going to go star hunting. I don’t know if they’ll get one back, I don’t know if everything will work out fine for them. There are other teams that are interested in this, and I’m not going to tell you who because others are going to grab my info, but there are players they are keeping an eye on. And they’ll have the ability to sign one, especially if a player says, ‘Hey, send me to Miami’.
They have a small window to spend some cash, before being hit by the second ‘tax apron’ (a payroll threshold – $179.5 million – introduced in the new CBA beyond which teams can no longer use any exceptions other than minimum contracts to heal players). They have a few draft picks they can trade. After the draft, they will have access to their 2030 pick. They have the 18th pick in this draft, not that it’s super interesting.
I don’t think they can beat all their potential competitors on a star trade, but if a player says to his franchise in the next two weeks ‘Send me to Miami’, they won’t be in the worst position to get there. »
The room for maneuver is therefore limited. The new CBA will come into effect on July 1, so they will need to operate before then. A lot of teams have something to offer at least as well as the Miami Heat to a franchise that would be ready to trade its star. That’s why Brian Windhorst thinks the star needs to have his team sent to Florida specifically.
Where we necessarily think of Damian Lillard, who made it clear that the Miami Heat would be his favorite destination IF he and the Blazers separated. One, it’s not won. Of two could it happen in 15 days?
Because Portland will inevitably want to try to attract a star too, in order to convince Dame to stay. Which might take some time…
The other big names regularly mentioned for a trade are Jaylen Brown, Trae Young, Jordan Poole or Bradley Beal.
It remains to be seen who the Heat would be ready to trade, in addition to the draft picks. Tyler Herro and his four-year, $120 million extension would likely hang in the balance. After all, Miami managed to go to the final without him.
