Miami-Dade County Becomes Class 3 CRS, Resulting in Flood Insurance Premium Discounts

This Thursday, the mayor of Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, and the administrator of the federal emergency management agency (FEMA), announced that Miami-Dade will become a class 3 county in the community rating system (CRS). , for its acronym in English) of the national flood insurance program.

The new ratings will result in discounts on flood insurance premiums for certain residents.

“People and businesses outside of cities in the county will receive a 35% discount on their flood savings,” said Mayor Levine Cava.

It will also result in annual savings estimated to be $12 million.

“This helps because this indicates that it directly impacts the cost of living of our residents and at the same time, improves the way we deal with an issue as important as flooding,” said District 12 Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez.

The county’s new classification, according to experts, is the result of flood mitigation strategies that have been implemented to protect lives and reduce property damage.

Recently, investments of one billion dollars in water pumping system infrastructure have been planned in the county.

Home and business owners in the unincorporated municipal service area will be able to get the discount on most National Flood Insurance Program policies issued or renewed beginning April 1 of this year.

The county mayor also said that talks are underway with insurance companies so that more people have access to these discounts.
