It had started so well for Angelique Kerber: two “noughties” in singles, an almost sensational victory in doubles. Her season, it seemed for a brief moment at least, should finally get going in Miami.
The elation lasted only a few hours, however, after Alexander Zverev Kerber also flew out of the tournament, at 5: 7, 2: 6, her feared opponent Viktoria Azarenka was again too strong.
And since her doubles partner Simona Halep also gave up injured, Kerber had to start the journey home early. Before the start of the unpopular clay court season, she is still waiting for a top result this year – and to find a recipe against Asarenka. In the tenth duel with the Belarusian, Kerber lost for the ninth time, she had started well again, but did not bring the 4-1 lead in the first set to the finish.

After winning the tournament in Acapulco, the 14th title of his career, Zverev had also figured out chances at the Masters in Miami, especially since Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem were absent. His goal, said Zverev in Mexico, is “to win the Grand Slams on the big stages of the tour”.
Zverev falls back into old behavior patterns in Miami
After a confident first sentence, in which Zverev showed everything that makes his game on a good day, the 23-year-old completely lost the thread in the second round – and fell back into old behavior patterns. Furious, he slammed his club on the hard court, received a warning from chair referee Mohamed Lahyani, complained about the rallies and could no longer find the necessary calm and serenity.
