The head of the British domestic intelligence service, MI5, Ken McCallum, revealed that the device relies on artificial intelligence to detect those who pose a terrorist threat.
McCallum said Britain’s domestic intelligence service has developed artificial intelligence tools that monitor violent online videos watched by suspects to determine whether they pose a threat.
According to McCallum, the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, the technology also detects violence in images, so that employees do not have to watch videos of beheading or torture, for example.
In a speech to students at the University of Glasgow, McCallum highlighted the role of mathematics and data science in maintaining the security of the country, saying: “Developments in artificial intelligence are changing the world for all of us.”
Here are the highlights of McCollum’s letter:
• Understanding, for example, that someone actively participating in far-right online forums has seen videos of beheadings can help us assess the level of danger they may pose.
• We harnessed automated capabilities to detect violent material within large data streams.
• McCallum suggested that the Homeland Security Service apply artificial intelligence capabilities in analyzing intercepted conversations.
• It’s no secret that MI5 needs to understand masses of audio data, as they strive to penetrate the intentions and plans of spies and terrorists.
• McCallum said, “When I joined, turning that raw sound into useful information was a daunting task for hundreds of professionals, who would sit for long periods of time with headphones on. Today we want to automate as much as possible.”
