Morris Garage (MG) announced its commitment to the Indonesian automotive industry. After being present since 2020 by importing cars as a whole, next year MG will produce its cars in Indonesia.
This was conveyed by Arief Syarifudin, Marketing & PR Director of MG Motor Indonesia. According to him, this is MG’s commitment to the Indonesian automotive industry.
“MG is very committed to being able to provide good things product, service. And MG has decided to produce cars domestically,” said Arief at the MG booth at GIIAS 2023 which was held at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in BSD City, Tangerang.
Arief said that it is planned that MG car production in Indonesia will be carried out in early 2024. However, Arief has not been able to reveal more details regarding this plan. Likewise regarding which car will be produced in Indonesia, Arief is still silent.
“That Q1 (first quarter) 2024 is already running production. At a later time one product line up later will beproduceI will inform you further,” said Arief.
“What is certain is that we, from MG Motor Indonesia, really do concern with what is a government program. And what (which is produced in Indonesia) combustion (gasoline car), is it electric (electric cars) we are waiting for the game date,” he said.
Currently, MG has sold several cars in Indonesia. Starting from the MG 5 GT sedan model, the MG ZS SUV, MG HS, to the MG 4 EV electric car, it has been sold in Indonesia. Most recently, MG announced that it would sell the MG ZS EV electric car in Indonesia. The electric car was exhibited at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS).
However, all MG cars sold in Indonesia are still fully imported, aka CBU (completely built up). The cars are still being manufactured in Thailand.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) reported that there would be four car brands that would build factories in Indonesia. According to the plan, they will start domestic vehicle production in the first quarter of next year.
Taufiek Bawazier as Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics Industry of the Ministry of Industry, said the four car brands that want to build factories in Indonesia come from Europe and China. Unfortunately, he did not elaborate further on the names of the four brands.
