Many critical voices have been raised after the launch of the new super league. Nicklas Carlnén, Malmö FF’s CEO joins the crowd that is critical of the super league. As a board member of Eca, football’s European interest organization, he wants there to be an opportunity for teams to participate in the best competitions.
– It is far from the solidarity that we strive for with a clear system where there is an opportunity for everyone to participate in the best competitions, says Nicklas Carlnén.
Carlnén believes that it is too early to answer how the reversal of European top football will affect Swedish football.
– We are more often represented in the Europa League than the Champions League and with the new Conference League the possibilities increase further that we have Swedish teams in the European Games. From that perspective, it is not certain that it will affect so much purely sporting, but it will definitely not be worse opportunities for any Swedish team, says Nicklas Carlnén, CEO of Malmö FF.
Uefa, in consultation with the Italian, Spanish and English football federations, has condemned the Super League and threatened to suspend participating clubs from “all other competitions at the domestic, European world level”. The Super League, in turn, has threatened to take legal action.
– From a European perspective, that we do not have common series where all the teams meet and the best win, I think that is directly detrimental to European football, says Nicklas Carlnén.
