Mexico’s Supreme Court judges unanimously ruled on Tuesday that the criminalization of abortion in the country is unconstitutional.

Washington Post writes that abortion has thus been decriminalized – even in the country which has the world’s second largest Catholic population.
The proposal that was considered in the Supreme Court was to look at whether the law prohibiting abortion in the state of Coahuila is unconstitutional. It was a unanimous Supreme Court agreed, according to The universal.
The newspaper writes that eight of the total of eleven Supreme Court judges had announced in advance that they would support the proposal.
Abortion is only legal in four of the 32 states in Mexico. Following the Supreme Court’s decision, it will no longer be criminal to have an abortion in the other states – even if this does not necessarily mean that it is legalized.
