Mexico’s President Defends Use of Russian and Cuban Vaccines for Anticovid Booster Campaign

Mexico City, Oct 24 (EFE).- The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, defended this Tuesday that his Government use the anticovid vaccines from Russia and Cuba for the free booster campaign after having received the Cuban drug from Abdala.

“Out of interest, in some cases, it began to be argued that the vaccines that the health sector is applying are not effective, they have gone so far as to say things that I do not even dare to repeat here, because they are gigantic absurdities, but all the vaccines are already guaranteed.” vaccines for the people,” he expressed in his daily press conference.

The Government of Mexico has the goal of applying this cold season 35.2 million vaccines against influenza and 19.4 million against covid-19, a disease for which it will use the Abdala biological, made in Cuba, and the Sputnik, from Russia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has not endorsed the use of any of these drugs as a booster against covid-19, but López Obrador supported their effectiveness after being vaccinated live with Abdala’s.

“Do not be confused, all the vaccines that are applied go through a quality test and public health should not be used for political purposes, they are different things,” said the president.

Health has to do with human rights, it is a fundamental human right, nothing about politics, nothing about ideologies,” he added.

The immunization campaign, which began last week, is aimed at specific groups, such as the population aged 60 and over, pregnant women and people with comorbidities from five years of age.

The vaccines will be free, but López Obrador promised that people will be able to buy those from other pharmaceutical companies, such as Pfizer and Moderna, after their expected approval in November by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris).

“As we also live in a free country, it is decided that vaccines can be marketed, that whoever wants to pay, buy their vaccine, can do so,” he assured.

Mexico is the fifth country with the most confirmed deaths from covid-19, with more than 334,000 officially recognized. EFE
