Mexico City. The candidate of the Let’s keep making history coalition, Claudia Sheinbaum, said that Latin America’s second economy has “a model that is working,” in an interview with AFP.
Sheinbaum highlighted the “political stability and commercial openness” that Mexico offers investors, a country whose GDP grew 3.9% in 2022 and 3.2% last year, and which expects growing foreign investment due to the so-called relocation of supply chains from Asia (nearshoring).
“There is a model that is working. And on the other hand, the proximity with the United States and the treaty [de libre comercio] which also allows, in the face of the China-United States conflict, there to be investment in Mexico,” said the 61-year-old candidate.
“What we want is for this investment to bring comprehensive development to our country,” added Sheinbaum.
In previous statements to reporters from the foreign press, the candidate maintained that “Mexico is an example of good economic management without being neoliberal.”
“Poverty and inequality have been reduced based on our own model, recognizing the market economy and private initiative,” he added.
Regarding the relationship with the United States, Sheinbaum predicts a positive course, regardless of the result of the presidential elections in that country next November, between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden.
“There will be good relations with Trump or with Biden. They need us. We need them,” the candidate told reporters.
In addition to being the destination of 80% of local exports, the United States shares with Mexico a border of more than 3 thousand kilometers and an intense bilateral agenda, with an emphasis on issues such as migration and security.
Machismo “is being left behind”
A physicist by profession and a doctor in environmental engineering, Sheinbaum assured AFP that her eventual government will seek to “accelerate the energy transition towards renewable sources and carry out energy efficiency programs.”
This vision contrasts with the policy of the government of outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador – which Sheinbaum defends and promises to continue -, who promoted the production of the indebted state oil company Pemex.
Faced with the possibility of becoming Mexico’s first female president, Sheinbaum sees a sign that “machismo is being left behind.”
“It means that we are building an egalitarian country,” he said.
