The Mexican National Team, already with a ticket in hand for the U-20 World Cup, was proclaimed champion of the Concacaf Pre-World Cup, after beating the United States 2-1 with goals from Mateo Levy and Diego Ochoa at the Nou Camp in León, where the final of the tournament that the Tricolor had not won since 2015 was held.
Eduardo Arce’s team had to come from behind to consolidate their position as champions of the Concacaf U-20 World Cup, as the United States opened the scoring with a goal by Nimfasha Berchimas in the 52nd minute of the match.
In added time, when it seemed that the United States would be crowned champion of the Concacaf U-20 World Cup for the fourth consecutive time, Yael Padilla took the ball from the left wing and sent a cross to Mateo Levy, who headed the ball in to tie the score and send the match into overtime.
With the score at 1-1 after 120 minutes, everything seemed to indicate that the championship would be decided by penalties, but Diego Ochoa arrived to send the ball into the net with a header and thus give the title to the Mexican National Team.
Mexico finished the Concacaf U-20 World Cup undefeated. In the group stage, the Tricolor was the leader with seven points, after beating Haiti (4-0), Guatemala (1-2), and drawing 1-1 against Panama.
In the quarterfinals, the Mexican national team defeated Costa Rica 2-1, a result that gave them a ticket to the U-20 World Cup that will be held in Chile in 2025.
Mexico beat Cuba 2-0 in the semi-finals, before defeating the United States 2-1 in the grand finale that was decided in extra time.
When and where will the U-20 World Cup be held?
The date of the U-20 World Cup is still unknown. It has only been reported that Chile will be the host country.
