Mexico City. Mexico won its first gold medal at a World Rowing Championship by winning the lightweight quadruple sculls event at the world competition held in St. Catharines, Canada.
The tricolors Miguel Carballo, Marco Velázquez, Rafael Mejía and José Navarro climbed to the top of the podium by winning the final with a time of 5:47.39 minutes, with an advantage of 35 hundredths of a second ahead of the representative of the United States (5:47.74), who was the favorite and took the silver. Germany took the bronze with a time of 5:50.52
“It’s wonderful for me and my team, just hearing the Mexican anthem and getting on the podium is incredible,” said Marco Velázquez.
“After Paris I came to bring a bit of my experience, it was a great race and now we are enjoying the result,” added Miguel Carballo, who competed a few weeks ago alongside Alexis López in the men’s lightweight double sculls event at the Olympic Games.
Carballo also won silver in the men’s lightweight double sculls event at the World Cup in Poznan, Poland, in June with Alexis López.
Fellow Mexicans Kenia Lechuga and Alexis López closed their participation in the St. Catharines World Championships by finishing in fourth and sixth place, respectively, in the lightweight single sculls events.
