Mexico City. The Mexican government expressed its commitment to the Haitian government to continue supporting and accompanying the peace consolidation process in the Caribbean nation.
This Monday, Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena had a virtual meeting with Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille, in which, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they discussed bilateral relations during the transition period that the country is going through.
The Mexican official insisted that Mexico is willing to continue to contribute to institutional strengthening, economic development and the implementation of social programs to address the needs of the Haitian population.
According to the statement, Secretary Bárcena “reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to continue strengthening cooperation,” through programs such as training for Haitian security forces provided by the Ministry of National Defense, as well as initiatives in agriculture, resilience to climate change, and humanitarian aid.
Meanwhile, the Haitian Prime Minister outlined the priorities of his government program, which include responding to the security crisis, strengthening justice and the rule of law, economic recovery and a public communication strategy.
Conille also highlighted the importance of Latin America and the Caribbean’s support for the transition process in his country, and thanked Mexico for its solidarity.
The SRE indicated that Bárcena and the Haitian prime minister agreed on the need to join forces against illegal arms trafficking, as part of the comprehensive regional security strategy.
They also agreed to hold a meeting during the high-level week of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, which will take place from September 22 to 28 in New York, “in which the Prime Minister will promote comprehensive cooperation initiatives for Haiti.”
