People in Mexico City ran out of their homes in about a minute, some still in their pajamas. In some neighborhoods, the lights went out due to tremors. According to Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, there are no reports of more serious damage.

Guerrero Governor Héctor Astudillo said a man with a pillar had died in Coyuca de Benitez. He previously stated that he had no information about more extensive material damage. Authorities in Guerrero said the quake caused landslides and rocks on the roads.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) first reported a magnitude 7.4 earthquake, later adjusting the figure to 7.0. It also originally established an epicenter 37 kilometers northeast of the city of San Marcos.

According to Reuters, the tsunami warning applied to the state of Guerrero on the southwest coast of Mexico, it was revoked about two hours after the earthquake.

The Mexican state energy company said that the earthquake in the capital of Mexico, the surrounding state of Mexico, as well as in the states of Guerrero, Morelos and Oaxaca caused power outages for 1.6 million people.
