Mexico to send diplomatic letter to Canada over allegations of judicial reform

The President Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorannounced this Friday that it will send, as well as USAa diplomatic letter a Canadaafter the ambassador of that country, Graeme C.Clarkreported Canadian investors worried for the reform of the judiciary.

López Obrador regretted that Canada has “harmonized” with the United States to criticize the constitutional reform for elect judges y magistrates by popular vote.

Clark’s statement adds to the criticism issued by Ken Salazarthe United States ambassador to Mexico, who warned about possible negative impacts of the reform in the Mexican democracy and in the business relationship between the United States and Mexico.

In addition to these governments, other bodies, including financial institutions such as Fitch, CitiBanamex y Morgan Stanleyhave expressed their concern about the reforms proposed by López Obrador, especially those related to the Judiciary.

In response, President López Obrador highlighted the apparent coordination between the United States and Canada to criticize his initiatives, which he considered “lamentable“, although he acknowledged that it is part of the”political propaganda” and the “meddling” of other countries in Mexico’s internal affairs

For this reason, López Obrador said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) will send the diplomatic note a Canadawhich is added to the one they will send to USA.
