Mexico, the US and Canada launch an initiative for the 2026 World Cup

MEXICO CITY, October 6 (EL UNIVERSAL).- The 2026 World Cup is approaching and host countries such as Canada, the United States and Mexico must make different preparations to receive players and fans in their sports venues, hotels, and food establishments. , among others.

For this reason, the Federal Economic Competition Commission (Cofece), as well as the Antitrust Department of the United States Department of Justice and the Canadian Competition Bureau launched a joint initiative for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This initiative was given in the form of a workshop to local government officials of the host cities and World Cup organizers on how to prevent, identify and report collusive practices that harm consumers during the 2026 World Cup.

This workshop is the first of various trainings that will be carried out to prevent companies from carrying out anti-competitive conduct such as price manipulation or the illegal distribution of funds within the framework of the 2026 FIFA World Cup that will take place in Mexico, the United States and Canada. markets. For this reason, Cofece will offer different training among officials and authorities, to guarantee free competition in any of the three host countries for the World Cup, maintaining the maximum benefit for consumers.

The purpose of this workshop is a joint initiative for information exchange mechanisms, as well as preventing companies from carrying out anti-competitive behavior such as price manipulation or illegal market sharing.

This workshop considers the damage that such conduct could cause to society, taking into account the economic impact that the World Cup will have in Mexico. Therefore, they must guarantee a “level playing field” for all companies that want to offer their goods and services.

Likewise, it is the second working meeting between the three competition authorities, after having met in June within the framework of the forum “Actions for the protection of sport in Latin America and the Caribbean” organized by the United Nations Office against Drugs and Crime.

When and where will the 2026 World Cup matches be?

There are more than two years until the start of the 2026 World Cup, where Mexico will host the opening match at the Azteca Stadium.

FIFA awarded 13 games to Mexico, while another 13 will go to Canada.

The remaining 92 games will be played by the United States, including the final.
