The United States, Mexico and Brazil are the three countries in America that COVID infections presented in the last week, as reported by the Pan American Health Organization (OPS).
The director of the organization, Carissa Etienne, explained that in the last week the American continent reported more than 1.5 million new cases of COVID and about 20 thousand deaths related to this disease.
In addition, he said that for now Central American countries, including Belize, Guatemala and Honduras, are experiencing an increase in infections due to COVID.
For his part, the advisor to the OPS on viral diseases, Jairo Méndez-Rico, indicated in a press videoconference that in Mexico there have been just over three million 249 thousand cases of COVID, coupled with more than 254 thousand 400 deaths from the same virus.
He specified that the Delta variant It already represents more than 94 percent of infections in the country and up to 97 percent in confirmed cases in Mexico City.
“The Delta variant already represents, at the country level, more than 94 percent of the sequences reported during the last epidemiological week. And up to 97 percent of the sequences reported only for Mexico City, ”said Méndez-Rico.
For this reason, he specified that for now the greater circulation of the Delta variant It has been observed in the states of Sinaloa, Baja California Sur, Quintana Roo, Veracruz, the State of Mexico and Mexico City.
“There is no doubt that the control measures implemented by the country, including, of course, vaccination, have allowed the increase in cases to be occurring at a slower rate; however, constant vigilance must be maintained ”, recalled the member of the OPS.
Finally, the OPS unveiled a new initiative in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) which aims to bring the technology of COVID vaccines with RNA to the region, being considered one of the most effective antigens.
With this model for the production of COVID vaccines, it is expected to make use of international agreements to strengthen the productive capacity of the region.
