Mexico takes a step closer to legalizing marijuana – Abroad – News

316 out of 468 deputies voted in favor of approving the bill. It has now been submitted to the Senate for approval.

People over the age of 18 may have up to 28 grams of marijuana, marijuana clubs may be open, and marijuana may be grown and traded in places approved by the authorities, as envisaged in the bill.

The project was already approved by the Senate in November, but the House of Commons introduced a number of changes that have yet to be approved by the Upper House, a spokesman for the Senate Judiciary Commission told the DPA.

With the adoption and entry into force of the new law, a period of 100 years will have come to an end when marijuana use has been illegal in Mexico.

With a population of 126 million, Latin America will be the third country in the world after Uruguay and Canada, where marijuana is legalized nationwide.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that a total ban on the use of marijuana for recreational purposes was unconstitutional.

People of legal age have the right to “decide without any interference what kind of recreational activities they want to engage in,” the court said.

The Court also stated that this right is not absolute and that certain drugs need to be regulated, but that the consequences of marijuana use “do not justify a total ban on its use”.
