Mexico City. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), in coordination with the federal Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), reported in a statement that 32 archaeological pieces that were in the possession of an American citizen residing in Oregon, United States, were returned.
Experts from the INAH confirmed that the pieces – which include anthropomorphic figures, pots and vases – were movable monuments owned by the Mexican nation. “Of the recovered objects, 31 are archaeological monuments, manufactured between 300 BC and 1521 AD, while the remaining one is a historical asset,” the institution said.

Marylou Morton, a US citizen living in Portland, announced in 2023 her intention to return the pieces, which had been in the neighbouring country since the middle of the last century. After the corresponding procedures, Consul Carlos Quesnel Meléndez travelled to the city of Eugene, in the state of Oregon, to formally receive the items.
Through the Mexican Consulate in Portland, the Mexican Government thanked Mrs. Morton for the return of the pieces and called on the population not to participate in the illicit trafficking of archaeological goods and to protect Mexican cultural heritage.
