Mexico received a new shipment with 592 thousand Sputnik V vaccines against Covid-19, which arrived at the facilities of the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), indicated the Ministry of Health (SS). “With this shipment, our country has received 4 million doses of Sputnik V, which arrived at AIFA during November on seven Emirates airline flights.”
Through a statement, he detailed that the biological – acquired from the company Human Vaccine – landed at 2:01 a.m. on flight EK-9935. After in February 2021, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) issued an authorization for the use of the Sputnik V vaccine from Russia.
In this regard, the Ministry of Health specified that personnel from different government agencies participated during the arrival and transfer of the vaccines, such as the National Center for Child and Adolescent Health (Censia) and Cofepris. He added that Biological and Reagent Laboratories of Mexico (Birmex) will be responsible for the distribution of vaccines throughout the country.
Likewise, the SS explained that the doses will be used in the National Vaccination Campaign for the 2023-2024 winter season, which began on October 16 and will conclude on March 31 of next year.
For this reason, the agency invited the population with serious health conditions to get vaccinated. Especially for adults over 60 years of age, pregnant women, people with comorbidities and health care personnel. While, in the particular case of vaccination against seasonal influenza, the secretariat announced that girls and boys between six and 59 months of age are being immunized.
“People with comorbidities and, therefore, candidates to receive vaccines against seasonal influenza and COVID-19, are those who live with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), diabetes mellitus, morbid obesity, acute or chronic heart disease, cancer and renal failure, as well as immunosuppression developed by illness or medical treatment.”
