Mexico City. This Thursday, Mexico reaffirmed its support for Palestine to be a full member of the United Nations (UN).
The Mexican representative to the UN, Héctor Vasconcelos, participated in the open debate of the UN Security Council (CSONU) on the situation in the Middle East.
There he emphasized the call to the parties to definitively and permanently cease hostilities, especially indiscriminate attacks against the civilian population, as well as against medical and humanitarian personnel, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( SRE).
Likewise, he reaffirmed Mexico’s support for a comprehensive and definitive solution to the conflict, under the premise of two States, that addresses Israel’s legitimate security concerns and allows the consolidation of a politically and economically viable Palestinian State that coexists with Israel. within secure and internationally recognized borders, in accordance with international law, in particular UN resolutions.
“Promoting, at all times, the peaceful resolution of disputes and in the face of the prolonged stagnation in the peace process, Vasconcelos and Cruz reaffirmed Mexico’s support for Palestine’s aspiration to be a full member of the UN,” said the Foreign Ministry. .
In that sense, he regretted that on April 18, the Security Council did not approve the draft resolution for full membership of the State of Palestine in the Organization, due to the veto by the United States.
“Mexico has supported, over time, various actions in various multilateral forums that have, among others, the legal effect of recognizing Palestine as a State. “Our country voted in favor of resolution 67/19 of the General Assembly of November 29, 2012, which admitted Palestine as a non-member observer state of the UN,” said the SRE.
