Mexico City. The Mexican government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), reiterated on Tuesday its support for respecting the “neutrality and inviolability” of the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), in the face of Israel’s intention to declare it a “terrorist organization” and thereby prevent it from operating in that country.
In a statement, the Mexican Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its support for the neutrality and inviolability of UNRWA, which serves nearly 6 million Palestinian refugees, and emphasized that “no organization can replace or substitute its capacity, particularly given the complex situation suffered by thousands of civilians in the occupied Palestinian territory.”
He recalled that Mexico supports the mandate of UNRWA established in resolution 302 (IV) of the United Nations General Assembly of December 1949 and recognized the important and indispensable role of the Agency in its 75 years of existence.
She stressed that this work is essential to ensure the exercise of human rights and provide humanitarian assistance, including basic and emergency services, to nearly six million Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
“In this regard, we are pleased that various donor countries have resumed their voluntary financial contributions to the Agency. Mexico, while reaffirming its financial support for UNRWA, praises its efforts, which are in line with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Organization,” he said.
On July 12, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on countries to protect UNRWA, its staff and mandate, as he denounced that 194 UNRWA workers have died since the war broke out on October 7.
At the same time, he called on countries to resume their financial contributions so that the agency can continue its humanitarian work.
“Without the necessary support and funding for UNRWA [Agencia de la ONU para los Refugiados Palestinos]”Palestinian refugees will lose a vital lifeline and the last ray of hope for a better future,” he said at the UN donors’ conference.
